Gas Goes Green
Gas Goes Green is an initiative launched in 2020 by the Energy Networks Association. It is based on the ‘Pathways to Net Zero’ report released in 2019, which was written by Guidehouse (formerly Navigant) and peer reviewed by Imperial College London.
The goal of the programme is to create a net zero energy infrastructure throughout the UK that is powered by biogas, bio-synthetic natural gas (bioSNG), hydrogen and smart hybrid heating systems.
In its first phase, the programme will set out to:
- Lead a national gas boiler switchover scheme.
- Work to integrate hydrogen and renewable gases in the gas networks.
- Update safety measures to support a zero carbon gas grid.
- Make changes to connections to the gas grid for farmers and other businesses to supply green gases for the local gas grid.
The programme brings representatives from five of the UK’s gas network operators - National Grid, SGN, Northern Gas, Wales & West Utilities and Cadent gas - together with civil servants, engineering and policy experts to participate in a venture designed to put the UK in position to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
